Ancient Indian Trade and Modern Marketing
Ancient Indian Trade and Modern Marketing
Rediscovering Traditional Wisdom for the Business World of Today
When ancient wisdom meets modern marketing, the past becomes a powerful guide for the future.
What can a modern marketer learn from ancient India?
At first, the answer may seem surprising.
Marketing today is associated with branding, customer relationships, market networks, trust, quality and ethical business practices. Yet many of these ideas have deep connections with India's traditional commercial practices and knowledge traditions.
With the objective of exploring this connection, the Department of Commerce and Management, Surana College Peenya organized a seminar on “Ancient Indian Trade and Modern Marketing” on 7 September 2026, as part of the integration of Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) with Commerce education.
The seminar brought together 50 participants for an engaging exploration of India's rich heritage of trade and commerce.
When Commerce Has a History
India has a rich tradition of trade, commerce and merchant activity.
Ancient commercial networks connected communities, markets and regions, while merchants operated within traditions that emphasized values, relationships and responsible commercial practices.
The Department of Commerce and Management, Surana College Peenya designed the seminar to help students explore these traditional commercial practices and understand them through the lens of contemporary Commerce and Marketing.
The objective was not simply to look at the past, but to ask an important question:
What can the business world of today learn from the business wisdom of yesterday?
From Ancient Trade to Modern Marketing
Modern marketing focuses heavily on understanding customers, building brands and creating lasting relationships.
Interestingly, traditional Indian commercial practices offer valuable perspectives that can be connected with many contemporary marketing ideas.
Through this seminar, the Department of Commerce and Management, Surana College Peenya encouraged students to recognize that several principles considered essential in modern business have meaningful parallels in traditional Indian commercial thinking.
Trust: The Currency of Relationships
One of the powerful ideas explored during the seminar was the importance of trust.
Markets are built on relationships.
Customers need to trust businesses.
Businesses need to trust partners.
Employees need to trust organizations.
Technology may change the way businesses communicate, but trust remains fundamental to sustainable commercial relationships.
The seminar provided by the Department of Commerce and Management, Surana College Peenya encouraged students to understand trust, fairness, quality and integrity as values that remain relevant even in today's highly competitive marketing environment.
Ethics Beyond Business Transactions
Modern businesses are increasingly expected to demonstrate responsible conduct.
Consumers are more aware. Employees are more conscious of organizational values. Society expects businesses to consider their broader impact.
The session connected traditional commercial values with contemporary ideas of:
- Ethical business
- Fairness
- Integrity
- Quality
- Responsible commerce
- Sustainable relationships
For the Department of Commerce and Management, Surana College Peenya integrating these dimensions into Commerce education is an important step towards developing professionals who understand that business success and ethical responsibility can go hand in hand.
Learning from Indian Knowledge Traditions
Resource Person
The session was led by Sri. Vadeendra Kulkarni, a scholar and practitioner with a strong interest in Indian Knowledge Systems, Sanskrit, Indian heritage and traditional knowledge traditions.
His areas of engagement include Indian Knowledge Systems, Sanskrit and Indian literature, Indian cultural and knowledge traditions, ancient Indian trade and commerce, Indian heritage and business practices, and traditional values and ethical practices.
His interaction with students focused on connecting the heritage of Indian trade and commerce with contemporary education, marketing and professional life.
The Department of Commerce and Management, Surana College Peenya provided students with a platform to interact with the resource person and explore how traditional knowledge can contribute to contemporary business understanding.
Looking at Marketing Through a Different Lens
Students are often introduced to marketing through concepts such as:
Product → Price → Place → Promotion
But marketing is also about something deeper:
The seminar encouraged students to reflect on the human and ethical dimensions of commerce.
A successful business does not simply sell a product.
It creates value.
A successful brand does not merely attract customers.
It builds relationships.
And a sustainable business does not focus only on short-term transactions.
It builds long-term trust.
Questions That Connected the Past with the Present
The interactive Question & Answer session provided students with an opportunity to explore the relevance of Indian Knowledge Systems in greater depth.
Students raised questions related to:
- Traditional trade networks
- Ancient Indian commercial practices
- Merchant values
- Ethical business practices
- Customer relationships
- The relevance of IKS to modern Commerce and Marketing
The resource person connected these questions with contemporary business practices and encouraged students to reflect on how principles such as trust, integrity, fairness, quality and sustainability can be applied in today's business environment.
IKS and Commerce Education
The Department of Commerce and Management, Surana College Peenya recognizes that Indian Knowledge Systems can add a valuable dimension to Commerce education by encouraging students to look at business not only through modern theories, but also through India's intellectual, cultural and commercial heritage.
Such learning can help students develop a broader perspective of Commerce.
It encourages them to ask:
Where did some of our commercial practices come from?
What values guided traditional business relationships?
Which principles remain relevant today?
How can traditional wisdom contribute to responsible modern business?
These questions can make Commerce education more contextual, reflective and meaningful.
Ancient Wisdom for a Modern Business World
The business environment is changing rapidly.
Artificial intelligence, digital commerce, social media, fintech and globalization are transforming the way organizations operate.
Yet some fundamentals remain unchanged.
This is where the connection between ancient Indian commercial wisdom and modern marketing becomes particularly meaningful.
Technology may change how we do business.
But values continue to influence how sustainably we do business.
What Students Took Away
The seminar enabled students to understand ancient Indian trade practices, commercial networks and traditional business values while connecting them with contemporary concepts of marketing, branding, customer relationships and ethical business practices.
Through this initiative, the Department of Commerce and Management, Surana College Peenya aimed to encourage students to appreciate that professional success can be strengthened by values such as:
These are not merely historical values.
They remain valuable business principles in the modern world.
The Bigger Message
The true value of Indian Knowledge Systems lies not simply in looking backwards.
It lies in discovering ideas from the past that can inspire better decisions in the present and future.
The seminar on “Ancient Indian Trade and Modern Marketing”, organized by the Department of Commerce and Management, provided students with an opportunity to see Commerce through a wider lens—one that brings together heritage, knowledge, values and contemporary business practices.
It reminded us that innovation does not always mean abandoning tradition.
Sometimes, innovation begins by rediscovering what we already know.
From Ancient Markets to Modern Brands
The journey from ancient trade networks to today's global marketplaces is a long one.
The tools have changed.
The technologies have changed.
The markets have changed.
But one principle continues to connect them:
Business is ultimately about creating value and building relationships.
That is perhaps the most powerful lesson that ancient Indian commercial wisdom can offer the modern marketing world.
