Viduraneeti for Management: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Leadership

Connecting Indian Knowledge Systems with Ethical Leadership and Contemporary Management

In an era where management education increasingly focuses on leadership, emotional intelligence, ethical decision-making and responsible business practices, the Department of Commerce and Management, Surana College Peenya took an insightful step towards connecting these contemporary concepts with India’s rich intellectual heritage.

The Department of Commerce and Management, Surana College Peenya organised a five-day workshop on “Viduraneeti for Management: Ancient Wisdom, Modern Leadership” from 21 to 25 September 2026 at LH 01. The workshop was designed to introduce students to the principles of Viduraneeti from the Mahabharata and explore their relevance to Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS), management and leadership. The programme brought together 50 participants from the Commerce stream.

When Ancient Wisdom Meets Modern Management

The workshop highlighted an important idea: effective management is not only about knowledge and skills—it is also about character, values and responsible conduct.

Through the teachings of Vidura, students explored principles such as discipline, integrity, responsibility, self-management and value-based decision-making. The Department of Commerce and Management created a learning environment where students could look beyond conventional management theories and discover how traditional Indian wisdom can provide meaningful perspectives for contemporary professional life.

Learning from Vidura’s Wisdom

The workshop was conducted over five days, with each day focusing on a distinct dimension of leadership and management.

DAY 1

Introduction to Viduraneeti and Indian Leadership Wisdom

The first day introduced students to Viduraneeti, its origin in the Mahabharata, and its significance as a source of ethical and practical wisdom.

Students explored Vidura’s approach to leadership, governance, decision-making and responsible conduct, establishing a strong foundation for understanding the connection between ancient Indian wisdom and contemporary management.

DAY 2

Qualities of an Effective Leader

The second day focused on the characteristics of a wise and effective leader, including self-control, humility, truthfulness, patience, courage and sound judgement.

Selected Sanskrit shlokas were explained in their original context and connected with modern concepts such as emotional intelligence, teamwork and organisational behaviour. This helped students appreciate how timeless leadership qualities continue to have relevance in today's workplaces.

DAY 3

Ethical Decision-Making and Management

The third day moved towards one of the most important dimensions of management—ethics.

Students discussed integrity, fairness, responsibility and accountability and examined how these values can guide managers when dealing with workplace challenges, conflicts and competing interests.

The Department of Commerce and Management, Surana College Peenya used these discussions to encourage students to view managerial decision-making not merely as a business function, but as a responsibility that carries ethical and social dimensions.

DAY 4

Viduraneeti and Entrepreneurship

The fourth day connected Viduraneeti with entrepreneurship and business management.

Students explored concepts such as prudent decision-making, risk awareness, responsible use of resources, adaptability and character-building in the context of sustainable enterprises. They were encouraged to relate the teachings of Vidura to practical entrepreneurial situations and contemporary business challenges.

DAY 5

Applying Viduraneeti to Modern Management

The final day brought together the major learning from the workshop and focused on its application in contemporary professional and organisational environments.

Through discussions and reflective activities, students explored how self-discipline, ethical conduct, emotional balance and responsible leadership can contribute to effective management.

The concluding session reinforced the continuing relevance of Indian wisdom traditions in modern management education.

A Meaningful IKS Learning Experience

A key strength of the workshop was its ability to position Indian Knowledge Systems as a meaningful component of contemporary Commerce and Management education.

For the Department of Commerce and Management, the workshop provided an opportunity to demonstrate that IKS can go beyond cultural appreciation and become a source of practical learning in areas such as leadership, ethics, entrepreneurship, organisational behaviour and decision-making.

The workshop encouraged students to ask an important question:

How can timeless wisdom help us become better professionals and better leaders?

The sessions were facilitated by Smt. Hemavathi H. S., M.A., of Samskruta Bharati, a Sanskrit scholar with a strong commitment to promoting Sanskrit, the Bhagavad Gita and Indian Knowledge Systems.

Her areas of contribution include Sanskrit language and literature, Bhagavad Gita, Indian Knowledge Systems, Indian philosophy and wisdom traditions, Viduraneeti and the Mahabharata, values and leadership, and the application of Indian wisdom in contemporary life.

Her experience in teaching and knowledge-sharing provided students with an opportunity to engage with Indian wisdom traditions in an accessible and contemporary context. The report also highlights her recognition as a Sanskrit scholar and her achievements in learning and teaching the Bhagavad Gita.

From Values to Professional Competence

Knowledge creates competence, but values create responsible professionals.

The workshop reinforced a powerful message for students of Department of Commerce and Management, Surana College Peenya:

The principles explored during the five days—integrity, discipline, fairness, accountability, emotional balance, responsible leadership and prudent decision-making—are highly relevant to students preparing for careers in business, management, entrepreneurship and corporate environments.

For the Department of Commerce and Management, Surana College Peenya, integrating these perspectives into student learning supports the broader objective of developing graduates who are not only employable and professionally competent, but also ethical, responsible and value-driven.

Building Future-Ready Leaders Through Indian Wisdom

The Viduraneeti for Management workshop was more than an exploration of an ancient text. It was an opportunity for students to reflect on the kind of professionals and leaders they aspire to become.

By connecting the wisdom of Vidura with contemporary management practices, the Department of Commerce and Management, Surana College Peenya created a bridge between India’s intellectual heritage and the needs of the modern workplace.

The five-day learning experience demonstrated that ancient wisdom can still offer valuable perspectives for navigating modern challenges—with clarity, integrity, discipline and responsibility.

The Bigger Message

The relevance of Indian Knowledge Systems lies not only in preserving the past, but also in understanding how its principles can contribute to the future.

Viduraneeti reminds us that true leadership is not simply about authority—it is about wisdom, character, responsibility and the ability to make the right choices.

Through initiatives such as this, the Department of Commerce and Management, Surana College Peenya continues to enrich Commerce and Management education by bringing together knowledge, values, Indian wisdom and contemporary professional learning.

Ancient wisdom. Contemporary relevance. Responsible leadership.
